Washington Park offers six outdoor tennis courts located next to the International Rose Test Garden. Courts are maintained by Portland Parks & Recreation and available on a first-come, first-served basis, unless temporarily closed for construction, repair, tournaments, or special events. Make sure to bring your own equipment, wear non-marking soled shoes, and plan for a one-hour play limit when others are waiting.
The Tennis Courts are accessible via the Int’l Rose Test Garden and Portland Japanese Garden stop.
Plan Your Visit
Usually, you can simply walk up and play when a court is open. While the courts are generally not reservable for casual use, Portland Parks & Recreation may reserve them in spring and early summer for special events or youth programs. To inquire about reserving a court for an organized activity, call 503-823-2525 or visit the City’s Athletic Field Permitting resources.
Did You Know?
Pickleball isn’t allowed on the Washington Park tennis courts. The courts are designated for tennis play only, helping preserve court conditions and reduce conflicts between overlapping racquet sports in one of Portland’s busiest park areas.
Getting Here
Skip the parking stress and take transit. Parking fills fast on busy days and during events, and payment is required at all lots. The Washington Park Free Shuttle Loop stops at all major attractions throughout the Park, making it easy to get around without a car.

Take the Red Line or Blue Line to Washington Park Station. Take the elevator to the station plaza. From here, board the Washington Park Free Shuttle and ride 6 stops to the Int’l Rose Test Garden/Portland Japanese Garden stop. From here, the tennis courts are just around the corner.

Take TriMet Bus 63 to the SW Rose Garden Way & Sherwood stop, where the tennis courts are just around the corner.

Take TriMet Bus 20 to the W Burnside & NW 24th Pl stop. From here, use the Stearns Canyon Trail to enter the park. This paved, car-free trail gradually climbs approximately 0.3 miles through a shady canyon towards the Oregon Holocaust Memorial where you can board the Washington Park Free Shuttle and ride 1 stop to the Int’l Rose Test Garden/Portland Japanese Garden stop. Alternatively, continue on foot another approximately 0.3 miles via the MAC Trail, SW Rose Garden Way or other nearby paved garden paths to the tennis courts located off SW Kingston Ave.

Take TriMet Bus 15 to the W Burnside & NW 23rd stop. From here, cross Burnside and walk approximately 0.2 miles, where you can use the Stearns Canyon Trail to enter the Park. This paved, car-free trail gradually climbs approximately 0.3 miles through a shady canyon towards the Oregon Holocaust Memorial where you can board the Washington Park Free Shuttle and ride 1 stop to the Int’l Rose Test Garden/Portland Japanese Garden stop. From the Free Shuttle or Bus 63 stop in the Gardens area, the tennis courts are a very short walk.
From the Goose Hollow MAX station, the Madison Street Trail climbs gently uphill to the Park, connecting to the Rose Garden area where the courts are located.

From downtown or Goose Hollow, pedal up SW Park Avenue or SW Kingston Avenue, both of which connect directly into the Park’s internal road network. From Northwest Portland, you can enter at Burnside and follow the car-free Stearns Canyon Trail uphill until it meets the main park roads. Once inside the Park, follow signs toward the Gardens—the Tennis Courts are located nearby just off SW Kingston Ave.
Bike racks are available near the Portland Japanese Garden entrance and BIKETOWN bikeshare stations are located near the Oregon Holocaust Memorial and on SW Rose Garden Way.

Paid parking is available nearby on Rose Garden Way and Kingston Ave. Note your license plate when paying, and lock your car before exploring. A designated rideshare zone is located nearby at the same location as the Washington Park Free Shuttle stop.
Transit Tip
TriMet Bus Line 63 drops you off steps away from the courts, but the bus runs only from 10am to 6pm and departs from the Gardens area every hour.

The Free Shuttle Loop connects every major attraction on a continuous free loop. Hop on and hop off using this free service to explore multiple destinations, including the Tennis Courts, in one visit—without the hassle of parking or navigation.
Accessibility
The courts sit near paved walkways within the Rose Garden area. Terrain varies, and some routes may include moderate grade changes. Visitors using mobility devices may want to approach from the main Rose Garden Plaza for the smoothest path.
