4T Trail from Washington Park

Portland’s iconic 4T Trail (short for Train, Trail, Tram, and Trolley) combines roughly 4 miles of hiking with transit connections to form a loop through Portland’s west hills. Start your journey by taking the MAX Red Line or Blue Line from downtown to Washington Park Station. From here, follow posted 4T signs and hike uphill from Washington Park to Council Crest Park—at 1,073  feet, the highest point in the city! This hiking segment blends wooded paths, neighborhood edges, and city viewpoints, offering a unique mix of urban and natural environments as you leave the Park behind.

At the end of the trail, arrive at Oregon Health & Science University and board the Portland Aerial Tram for a sweeping descent above the city, with views of the Willamette River and Mt. Hood on clear days. From the South Waterfront, hop on the Portland Streetcar to complete the loop and return downtown.

This itinerary offers one of Portland’s most unique, car-free adventures—starting in Washington Park and connecting hiking, transit, and panoramic views into a single, memorable experience.
